KT is cooperating Nongshim Data System(NDS) to establish a ‘food safety history management’ solution. The food distribution history tracing, which usually took six days so far, will be done within 10 minutes. KT also is applying their independent blockchain development system, ‘GiGA Chain Baas(Blockchain as a Service)’ to local currencies, energy transactions, and healthcare fields to vitalize the blockchain ecosystem.

◇ KT, partnership with NDS…Developing Food Safety History Management Platform

On Jul. 18, KT has announced that it is signing a business agreement of ‘food safety history management’ based on blockchain technology with NDS to expand their blockchain service to the food retail industry.

‘Food safety history management’ is a business where the distribution of agricultural products, dairy product, and processed food are managed transparently with the application of blockchain technology. The entire distribution progress of production, process, examination, distribution, sales, and consumption will be handled by a blockchain, which is almost impossible to be forged, to make consumers buy food without concern.

Hypothetically, a customer who has purchased a pack of beef may check how the meat is distributed through the information of the stockbreeder, the processor, and mid-distribution by the Barcode or QR code. Additionally, KT will be able to manage distribution data systematically.

NDS already has an experience of food history management using blockchain technology in a test run. As a result, the time required to track food distribution history has dramatically reduced from 6 days to 10 minutes.

Both companies are planning to establish the ‘food safety history management’ platform by combining KT’s GiGA Chain Baas and NDS’s food history management solution by the second half of this year. Marketing, partnership expansion, and the regulation countermeasures will all be conducted together. The cooperation will be expanded to the healthcare business in the future, based on the food distribution business.

◇ Expanding the Blockchain Ecosystem with ‘GiGA Chain BaaS’

KT is also planning to expand the blockchain development platform GiGA Chain BaaS to various industry.

GiGA Chain BaaS is a blockchain platform in which the blockchain service developing environment, operation, and control are all provided in the cloud server. The customers can develop a smart contract without specialized developers or separately established servers. Only a few clicks will get a blockchain network installed.

KT is planning to launch different blockchain-based services in the industry, such as healthcare, energy transactions, and payment gateway. Above all, it will announce a smart hospital service in which personal medical information such as medical records, prescriptions, and diagnosis are managed with a mobile application through the cooperation with Lemon Healthcare.

Also, a blockchain local currency platform ‘Good(Chakkan) Pay’ is planned to boost the local economy.  It has already launched Gimpo Pay last April, and Ulsan Pay will begin in August. KT is preparing to submit the local currency usage data analysis to the local governments.

Lee, Dongmyeon, the head of KT Future Platform Business Part said, “We will cooperate with the partners of various fields such as banking and retail, to lead the blockchain ecosystem vitalization.”
