Recently, interest in K-Culture and K-Food in Russia and the CIS region exploded, Kazakhstan’s first Korean franchise DAK KKO DAK launched.

The interest of young people is developing from K-Pop to the overall Korean culture, such as Cosmetics, Movies, and Comic Books. In addition, with the emphasis on non-face-to-face due to the COVID-19, the popularity of Korean-style Home Meal Replacement (HMR), which can be delivered and eaten at home, is increasing day by day.

Reflecting this trend, the Korean Cultural Center in Russia held the Korean cultural festival to commemorate the ‘2020-2021 Korea-Russia Year of Cultural Exchange’. , folktale exhibition, animation screening and webtoon exhibition, design exhibition, VR exhibition at the National Folk Museum of Korea, Korean food (street food) cooking video introduction and cooking photo challenge, K-POP cover dance contest, TikTok dance challenge, Korean quiz contest program was presented.

The Korean food (street food) making and food photography challenge, which were the most popular during the event, were enough to confirm the possibility of success in Russia and the CIS region for Korean food. So, I met Choi Hong-jae, CEO of DAK KKO DAK, which recently opened the first Korean franchise restaurant in Kazakhstan.

The following is a Q&A with CEO Choi.

– First of all, please briefly introduce the restaurant to be opened.
This is the first overseas project made with 100% of the successful DAK KKO DAK franchise model in Korea, and I, the owner chef, are preparing to open it myself. It opens on July 1st and the first store is located at 24 Kenesary St. Currently, all chefs are made up of professional chefs dispatched from the Korean headquarters.

– There are many countries, so why did you first enter the CIS region, Kazakhstan?
The popularity of Korean sauces and food, especially chicken dishes, is beyond imagination in Russia and the CIS region. The popularity of Crazy HoT K-Food eating challenges such as spicy ramen, spicy chicken, and spicy tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes) triggered online has increased the interest of young people in the CIS region. In fact, we knew that interest was not easy to turn into a business, so a thorough field investigation was necessary. Last year, local fairs were held in each region with all ingredients in Korea, and Kazakhstan was chosen as the best place to spread K-Food.

– What are the advantages of DAK KKO DAK?
There are so many great restaurants in Korea. So, in order to survive the competition with them, they could not neglect their research on taste. They are proud of their taste because they survived such a battlefield. In particular, a variety of sauces that cannot be imitated by others and the secret frying powder make the chicken crispy and delicious.
I want to open it up soon and introduce it to everyone.

– What are your future plans?
Starting with the first store in Kazakhstan, we want to open stores throughout the CIS region so that everyone in the CIS can eat our DAK KKO DAK food.
I will work hard until the day my Kazakh friends eat our DAK KKO DAK instead of Shasli.
